About Harvest

Brothers Daniel and Tobias Remes and friend Ellen Bergström came together to start Harvest when they took a look at the fresh food market in their northern Sweden city of Umeå and realized it was severely lacking. With long cold and dark Swedish winters making it impossible to grow food locally year-round, Umeå residents are used to getting second-rate fresh food shipped from elsewhere in Europe. Harvest looks to change that by growing food right in Umeå year-round.

A lot of the produce we get in our local supermarkets are not that flavorful and nutritious. Even if demand of locally produced vegetables is super high in our town, it’s hard to find great quality produce during the wintertime.

Fresh and Sustainable

Not only is the group concerned about providing fresh and healthy food to their community, but they are also conscious of providing a more sustainable solution.

One of the main problems with our food system today is that the main focus is to get it as cheap as possible, and I think that makes the way we ship and produce food all over the world affect the health of the planet in a negative way
— Ellen Bergström, Harvest co-founder

In the Heart of the City

One of the most unique things about Harvest is their location. Their wood-paneled Greenery is located in plain view on one of the cities most popular biking paths. Their storefront, where they distribute their weekly CSA to customers, is inside of the Umeå train station. Both sites have been fantastic for helping drive awareness for the company in the city.

I never heard about Harvest… I actually found out about it because their container is located along my bike road, and I found this amazing container with this nice wooden panel around it, and I was interested…what is Harvest?!

Introducing New Flavors

Aside from their direct-to-consumer business, Harvest also sells to local restaurants. The group grow classics like basil, arugula, lettuce, and more exotic varieties not typically available in the local supermarkets, like lemon basil and wasabi arugula.

We choose to grow these less common crops because we want to introduce new flavors to people that they might not ever get to try otherwise
— Ellen Bergström, Harvest co-founder

Taste of Summer

For the trio at Harvest, the best thing they can hear from their customers is how fresh and flavorful the produce is, how much it differs from what is available at the grocery store, and how long it lasts at home!

The reaction we love the most is when people come back and say ‘It tastes like summer.’
